RayCAD automates HVAC tag placement in Revit through a configure-once, run-many workflow built around presets.

Configuration

Before running RayCAD on a project, create a preset in the Configuration Panel. A preset is a saved set of tagging rules for a specific project or drawing format. You can create one preset per project, or multiple presets within the same project for different formatting needs.

To build a preset:

  1. 1.Select which element types need tagging (duct, flex duct, air terminal).
  2. 2.For each element, map it to the Revit family or families that represent it in your model. An element can map to more than one family.
  3. 3.For each mapped family, assign the tag families to place.
  4. 4.Set tag-specific rules where needed. For example, on a duct length tag, set a default length so only ducts that differ from it get tagged. For any tag, set a frequency (e.g., tag every third or fourth element) if you don't want every instance tagged.

Once built, a preset stays applied to its project until changed. If you work across multiple projects with different presets, use the "Apply Previously Used Preset" command to instantly restore the last preset used on the current project, instead of reconfiguring it.

Running RayCAD

When you apply a preset, RayCAD validates it against the current model — for example, flagging families the preset references that aren't loaded in the project — and lists any issues found. Once validated, run the auto-tag command and select elements individually or tag everything in the current view.

Review

After tagging, the Review Panel opens automatically. It shows the number of tags placed and the estimated time saved; enter your hourly rate to see the dollar value saved in that session.

Tags RayCAD couldn't place with confidence are marked red, along with their elements. Use the arrow button to jump to each flagged tag in the view, check it, and click Resolve — the tag turns black and, once every tag on an element is resolved, the element itself returns to its normal color. If you close the Review Panel before finishing, reopen it anytime with the Review command.

Additional Tools

Duct Auto Cut: set a target length, select one or more ducts, and RayCAD splits them into equal segments of that length.

Parameter Sync: copies a value from one parameter into another across selected elements. Use this when a tag family reads from a shared parameter that isn't populated — instead of manually copying values element by element, select the source and target parameters, preview how many values don't match, and apply the update to all selected elements at once.
